Abstract

This research had been done with the purpose of studying the relations mastery goals, performance approach-avoidance goals, learning strategies and students, mathematic problem solving ability in Islamic Azad Universities in Kerman Province. required Data gathered by using goal achievement questionnaire by Elliot and Church and study process questionnaire by Biggs of a sample of n=427 students through random clustered sampling. Results showed that the effect of mastery goals on learning deep strategy is positive and meaningful and on mathematic problem solving ability is positive but is not meaningful. The effect of performance-approach on deep strategy and surface strategy is positive and meaningful and on mathematic problem solving ability is negative but is not meaningful. The effect of performance-avoidance on surface strategy is negative and meaningful and on deep strategy and mathematic problem solving ability is not meaningful. Therefore results showed that mastery goals have strong relations with learning deep strategy and high mathematic problem solving ability and performance approach-avoidance goals have strong relations with surface strategy and low mathematic problem solving ability.
Key words: mastery goals, performance approach-avoidance goals, learning deep and surface strategy, mathematic problem solving ability
