THE COMPARISON OF DEPRESSION IN EMPLOYED AND HOUSEWIFE MOTHERS

Abstract

This is a descreptive - analytic study of 200 employed and housewifed mothers aged 20-35 years old, married, moslem, live in meshad, have one or more child under 4 years old. The aim of this study was the comparison of depression level in employed and housewife mothers. The correlation between depression and the level of husband's co - operation at home, mothers self-esteem, social support, role and status satisfaction and the level of work stress, was also evaluated. The results of this research showed that the mean of depression in employed mothers was less than housewifed mothers (11/3 vs 13/4). The prevalence of depression was found 13% in employed and 20% in housewifed mothers. The result of this study revealled that employment indirectly affects and influenced on the level of pathological depression. The result of the present study suggested the needs of paying more attention to mothers' with young children for providing mental health.
