Exploring the Meaning of Belief: A Comprehensive Philosophical and Psychological Inquiry

This study aims to clarify the concept of belief and identify its structural components within the domains of philosophy of mind and cognitive science in order to resolve conceptual ambiguities and establish a theoretical foundation for its precise application in educational research. The study employs the method of concept analysis, which originates in analytic philosophy and is used to reduce conceptual ambiguity and clarify meaning. Belief is regarded as one of the most significant factors influencing human decision-making and action. From a comprehensive perspective, belief can be defined as the acceptance of the truth of a proposition. Its formation is shaped by multiple factors, including emotion and feeling, personal experience, reasoning, interpersonal interactions among individuals with diverse experiences, authority, culture and social systems, cognitive processes, and environmental influences. The conceptual analysis presented in this article provides a foundation for future research, particularly in the field of education.



 
Synopsis
This research was conducted with the aim of conceptually elucidating the concept of belief and identifying its structural components in the two fields of philosophy of mind and cognitive sciences. For this purpose, first, the conceptual boundaries of belief were delineated through comparison with related concepts (value, faith, attitude, disposition, norm, knowledge, expediency, and custom), and their commonalities and differences were explained. Subsequently, the views of philosophers (Plato, Hume, Wittgenstein, Ryle, Quine, Davidson, Fodor, Putnam, the Churchland’s, Kim, and Stich) regarding the nature of belief were examined, and a critical typology of philosophical approaches (dualism, philosophical behaviorism, identity theory, eliminativism, functionalism, and the holism/network theory of beliefs) was presented. In the next step, findings from cognitive sciences, including cognitive psychology, neurology, and cognitive neuroscience, concerning the process of belief formation, structure, and change were analyzed. The synthesis of findings from these two domains made it possible to provide a comprehensive framework for the concept of belief. According to these theories, the concept of belief, as one of the most fundamental cognitive structures of human beings, plays a pivotal role in explaining human agency, decision-making, and behavior. Beliefs are propositions that individuals consider to be true, even in the absence of the possibility of definitive proof of their truth. Despite this, the concept of belief in various scientific fields is faced with fragmented and sometimes contradictory definitions. Analytic philosophy emphasizes the propositional aspect of belief, psychology regards it as a mental state, social science scholars insist on its cultural embodiment, and epistemologists target its justificatory aspect. This conceptual fragmentation hinders constructive interdisciplinary dialogue and complicates its effective application in practical fields like education. Furthermore, conflating belief with related concepts such as knowledge, attitude, value, faith, disposition, norm, custom, and expediency has further blurred its semantic boundaries. The assumption that this concept is self-evident, stemming from its widespread use, adds to the necessity of its analytical examination. The research findings indicate that belief, despite its overlap with other concepts, possesses a distinct semantic core. Belief is the "acceptance of the truth of a proposition," whereas value has a normative and general orientation, faith is based on existential commitment, attitude includes affective and behavioral components, and disposition has a pragmatic nature. These distinctions reveal the necessity of avoiding conceptual confusion in educational research. Examining philosophical approaches to belief revealed a spectrum of views from dualism (Descartes) to eliminativism (the Churchland’s) and functionalism (Putnam). In this context, the network theory/holism of beliefs (Davidson), emphasizing the meaningful interconnectedness of beliefs, and the cognitive map theory (Braddon-Mitchell), referring to the representational structure of the mind, have opened new horizons for understanding the nature of belief. From the perspective of cognitive sciences, belief can be analyzed as a multi-layered and dynamic structure. Neurological findings indicate that belief formation involves the active selection of information based on goals and interests. The concept of a schema, as an organized mental framework, forms the central core of the cognitive architecture of beliefs. Schemas are compact patterns formed through processes of assimilation and accommodation within the context of early experiences and provide the substrate for core beliefs about the self, others, and the world. In this view, a belief is the specific content of a schema. For example, the schema "social situations are unpleasant" can contain the specific belief "if I speak in a group, I will be ridiculed." From a neurobiological perspective, beliefs are associated with the function of the prefrontal cortex and the limbic system. Encountering information inconsistent with existing beliefs increases activity in the amygdala and anterior cingulate cortex, causing resistance to change. This finding provides a biological explanation for the persistence of beliefs (similar to Hume's concept of habit).
Conclusion
The present research, by synthesizing philosophical findings and cognitive sciences, offers a multi-level framework for understanding the concept of belief, in which four levels—neurobiological (brain mechanisms and genetics), psychological (schemas, biases, cognitive models), philosophical-propositional (logical structure and justification), and socio-cultural (context of formation and transmission)—interact dynamically. Accordingly, belief is a complex and multifaceted concept whose structure comprises components such as justification, intentionality, direction of fit, affect, internal coherence with other beliefs, and practical functions. Factors such as past experiences, hereditary and genetic factors, habits, authority, social systems, values, and the individual's network of beliefs also play a role in its formation.
This integrated framework has important implications for the field of education. First, changing the beliefs of learners requires simultaneous attention to emotional factors, cultural contexts, pre-existing cognitive structures (schemas), and even biological resistances. Second, curricula and educational programs must focus on fostering critical thinking and reasoning skills (philosophical level), while also addressing the reconstruction of maladaptive schemas (psychological-cognitive level) and the creation of rich cultural environments (social level). Third, the educational system needs a clear explanation of the structure and nature of belief, the degree of awareness involved in it, and the manner of its formation, in order to base its programs for effecting desired changes in learners' beliefs and behaviors on this explanation. However, as the next step along this path, namely inferring the principles, methods, and strategies for elucidating and clarifying belief and its application in education, further research specifically pursuing these aims is required.
