Abstract

The aim of this study is to examine and criticize Pierre Bourdieu's view about the relationship between agency and culture in the area of education based on Islamic theory of action. To this purpose, concept interpretation and external criticism methods are used. The results of this paper showed that based on the Islamic theory of action, individual agency in Pierre Bourdieu's view is weak. Absence of internal factors, underestimating the individual action, reducing different kinds of action to improvised actions, cultural relativism, and reducing the education function to cultural reproduction are among the criticisms. The implications of these criticisms in the area of education, lead to consider student agency in education process so it changes the education from the reproduction state to an interaction between teacher and students. This interaction take places in different dimensions asymmetrically.
